The Five Solas: Signs to Follow on the Narrow Path

The doctrine that was at the heart of the Protestant Reformation can be summarized by the Five Solas, or five statements that encapsulate the heart of justification and salvation. It was these five doctrines that put the Protestant Reformers in the crosshairs of the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
  • Sola Fide (Faith Alone)
  • Solus Christus (Alone)
  • Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
  • Soli Deo Gloria (Glory of God Alone)

To summarize the meaning of this series of statements, “Christians are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone.”

Lead your family with this 7 day Bible study with more than 50 pages of structured history and Bible-based lessons, fun activities, and corresponding educational crafts that teach the Gospel using the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation.

If you are unfamiliar with The Reformation, on October 31, 1517, in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church. This historical moment is considered the spark of The Protestant Reformation. This Reformation was very important in the preservation of the Gospel in the face of the Roman Catholic Church which at that time had replaced God’s truth with the traditions of men.

The Five Solas, are slogans that were popularized by the Reformers during the Protestant Reformation of the Church (1350-1648). These slogans are based on biblical truths and sound doctrine. Knowing and understanding the Five Solas is important for your children–it will help them to read and apply Scripture to their lives.

Reformation Day Celebration

Do you celebrate Reformation Day as a Christian? If you don’t, you should! We began celebrating Reformation Day when our kids were little. It began as an alternative to celebrating Halloween but as I have learned more about the historical events that shaped the Protestant Church, I have come to treasure this month with my kids. It allows us to spend an entire month deeply entrenched in Church History and the Gospel.

If you utilize The Five Solas: Signs to Follow on the Narrow Path Family Bible Study leading up to Reformation Day the week or even month before you celebrate on October 31st, it is a great way to teach important doctrines that instill the Gospel with each lesson and activity you do as a family. My family uses this resource each year as we remind ourselves of what the Reformers did to protect the faith. I know you will enjoy it as much as we have to the glory of God!
